What was your first radio memory?
“I believe my first radio memory was from the summer of 1968. I was 6 years old and I remember hearing the song Hey Jude everywhere I went all summer long. I didn’t exactly know who was singing this song at the time since I was so young, but I remember it was always on the radio and that I loved the song.”
How did you first get into radio?
“One day in the spring of 2008 while I was visiting the small town of Goldfield in the “high desert” of Nevada, I walked into a café called Dusty Fenders Grill n’ Fill and met the owner Dusty Fenders. He was a tall, long-haired guy with cowboy boots and a cowboy hat with a deep, smooth voice. He was to me a bit intimidating as well. Little did I know that this moment would lead to the beginning of my radio career. It was a small café and I was the only customer at the time. Dusty came up to me, took my order and began telling me about his radio show he produced on Goldfield’s local community radio station, Radio Goldfield KGFN 89.1FM. His show “The Carl & Dusty Radio Boogie” was a mix of music and comedy with his side-kick, Carl Brownfield, another resident of Goldfield. Being an amateur musician, I asked Dusty if I could send him some of my music for him to possibly play on his radio show, he said sure and to send it to him. Once back home in Chelmsford, Mass, I received an e-mail from Dusty telling me he liked a couple of my songs and that he played them on his show. Before I knew it, I was writing short musical jingles for his show and having a lot of fun in the process. I had also become a big fan of “The Carl & Dusty Radio Boogie”. After a couple of years being a part of Dusty’s & Carl’s show, I asked Radio Goldfield if I could have my own show and they said yes! “The Mop Tops & The King” Radio Show was born in December of 2011. As of November 2014, there are 8 community radio stations carrying the show from Oregon to Nevada to Kansas to Massachusetts (2 stations) to Vermont to New Hampshire to Chelmsford, England.”
What is your favourite song ever?
“There are so many great songs that it’s nearly impossible to pick just one favourite. However, if I had to choose only one, it would be Over The Rainbow sung by 16 year old Judy Garland in the film The Wizard of Oz. This is possibly the greatest song of all-time in my opinion.”
What three songs would you take to a Desert Island?
“This is another tough question!
I would choose Hound Dog by Elvis Presley, While My Guitar Gently Weeps by The Beatles and The Wilbury Twist by The Traveling Wilburys.”
What is your ambition?
“To help spread joy and happiness to the entire world one listener at a time through the music of Elvis and The Beatles! … and to keep doing my show for as long as I can!”
