ShellyD presents the 90s Mixtape on Sundays, she plays a variety of fab tunes from the 1990’s and throws in a few interesting facts as well.

What was your first radio memory?

“I can remember my mum always having the radio on in the kitchen at home. She loved listening to the great Tony Blackburn (I’m a very distant relation to him, but that’s another story).

One summer, my brother and I tried to make our own radio station by holding up Walkie Talkies to mums record player – it was hilarious”

How did you first get into radio?

“I was 15 and just finished my GCSEs. I went to a hospital fete and kept asking the DJ there to play Kylie Minogue songs – he got so fed up with me, he said I could have a go at being a DJ there and then. I found out that he was the Chairman of the Hospital Radio Station and was invited to go and look around.

It was the best find ever, these were my new friends and I must have spent most of the Summer going up there on my bike. While other kids my age were off night clubbing, I was hooked on radio.

I learnt so much from being there. I was quickly trained up and went from just helping the other presenters to being given my own show. It was sad when I moved away to another area but I managed to find another hospital station to join and kept on going. I then moved on to community radio.

It’s been over 20 years since I discovered my passion for radio. I apologise if when I meet people, I talk too much about it. I guess I’m a bit of an anorak.”

What is your favourite song ever?

“Oh goodness, I don’t know, I like a bit of Kylie, Abba, Queen, Pharrell Williams such a mix…

I don’t have a favourite song, I have many favourites – the best songs are ones I can sing along to and know all the words. I have loads loaded up on my Singstar account.

I like songs from all decades and genres. There is some really good music out there.”

What is your ambition?

“I have always wanted to interview Kylie Minogue. That would be amazing. I would also like to get into a recording studio and record a song I’ve written. I have a whole list of ambitions but let’s keep this short ha ha…”
