Matt Willis presents Zest, a weekly show broadcast on Chelmsford
Community Radio every Tuesday from 7pm to 8:30pm, that features guests
previewing and discussing entertainment and culture in and around
Chelmsford.

What was your first radio memory?

"My first memory of actively listening to radio is actually quite late.
When I was 16 I started listening to the Top 40 and Mark Goodier’s
drivetime shows on BBC Radio 1 whilst doing my revision for my GCSEs.
As a consequence, I have a pretty good knowledge of 1996 Top 40 hits!"

How did you first get into radio?

"I volunteered at BBC Essex on their Community Helpline whilst studying
for my A-levels and got the chance to learn how to edit tape and
prepare items for broadcast. I then also volunteered at Hospital Radio
Chelmsford on the Request Show up until I went to Cardiff University
in 1999 to study for my English Literature degree.

At Cardiff I was elected Head of Music for the student radio station,
Xpress Radio, and presented a weekly music features show called
Priority with my music team. That was when I first got the chance to
interview people for a radio show and, among others, interviewed The
Polyphonic Spree, Brendan Benson and Slipknot. I was very proud that
Priority went on to win Best Show at the BBC Radio 1 Student Radio
Awards and I was subsequently able to complete work experience at BBC
Radio 1 on several shows in their studios and at two of their outside
broadcast events."

What is your favourite song ever?

"After seeing them at the Hollywood Bowl last year I am listening to a
lot of Earth, Wind and Fire at the moment; the experience of watching
them outside on a warm summer evening will be hard to beat for future
gigs I attend! My favourite band is Kings of Convenience, the
Norwegian indie folk-pop duo, but it is difficult to pick a particular
track of theirs over the others. One of the band, Erlend Øye, has also
recorded some great electronic music and this is probably the genre I
like the most. Daft Punk, Goldfrapp and Air are excellent and the
extended mix of the track ‘Bizarre Love Triangle’ by New Order is a
definite contender for my favourite song ever. So, if pushed, I will
go for that one!"

What is your ambition?

"My main ambition with Zest is to encourage people to attend more
cultural and entertainment events in Chelmsford because there are lots
of great options every week! It is great hearing from guests in the
studio who are passionate about the events they run and to give them
the platform to share this with the listeners."
