Luke Baynard

Luke Barnard

Luke presents the Saturday Breakfast show on Chelmsford Community Radio every Saturday from 8-11am, playing the soundtrack to start your weekend, with a mixture of music and chat from the topics from the past few days.

What was your first radio memory?

When I was 6 years old, a friend of mine had a small (and I mean small) radio transmitter. It was only strong enough to broadcast to the house we were in, but we made the most of it. We set up a laptop and played music to our parents listening downstairs, and even invited our next door neighbours over to listen.

This went on for about 6 months until the transmitter broke and as 6 year olds, weren’t financially stable enough to buy another one (along with the licences we found out we had to own too)

My dreams were shattered…

Until I turned 17 and joined Hospital Radio Chelmsford…

How did you first get into radio?

… I had found out about Hospital Radio Chelmsford when I was 15 but was told I was too young to join, so had to do the gruelling task of waiting 2 years. On the day of my 17th birthday, I resent my application and joined later that year after my first year at College had finished. I joined the Tuesday night request show; going round the wards speaking to patients and collecting their requests and playing them on the radio between 8:30pm and 10pm. I did that from October 2012 to February 2014, then went on to present my own show straight after the Tuesday night request show from 10pm-midnight called The Late One with Luke, which I did up until July 2015 when I left the station.

I joined CCR in August of 2014 covering for Garry Ormes who presented The Friday Feeling Show. After a few weeks of covering him, I was no longer free Friday evenings to do the show. I was offered the Monday Wake Up slot from 6am-7:30am and presented that from around October to middle of February 2015. Then, the mighty Dan & Sam left Saturday morning and somehow, the bosses at CCR thought it was a good idea to have me follow in their footsteps. But here I am today, still presenting that Saturday morning slot. Or as Studio Matt keeps teasing me, I’m “filling in for a while until someone comes along to fill the slot… Yeah, thanks Matt…

What is your favourite song ever?

I cannot whittle it down to just one song, as there are many great songs out there. I’d say, from this decade it would have to be Magic! Rude. Doesn’t seem to get boring, even after the amount of times I listen to it…

What three songs would you take to a Desert Island?

Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton Islands in the Stream, Simon & Garfunkel I am a Rock (I am an Island) and Sammy Hagar All We Need Is An Island. See the link…?

What is your ambition?

My ambition is to be in radio. I love music, I love talking, so what better way to mix the 2 than be be on the radio?
